Metabolic Syndrome
|
|
Metabolic Syndrome is a constellation of metabolic abnormalities (obesity, glucose intolerance, unfavorable cholesterol, high blood pressure) that predisposes individuals to coronary artery disease and diabetes. The underlying disorder in Metabolic Syndrome is insulin resistance. Being insulin resistant means the body does not respond to the effects of a given quantity of insulin the way a normal body should.
The insulin-resistant people keep their blood sugar under control by producing more insulin than a normal person would, and in fact, they may have double the normal circulating level of insulin in the blood. Most insulin-resistant people are overweight. Conversely, virtually all obese people are insulin resistant, to some degree.
Metabolic syndrome is significant for a number of reasons. It involves 25% of the population and its prevalence is climbing. The causes are the same as for obesity – poor eating habits and the inactive lifestyle that occurred in the last forty years.
Alpha-Plan offers a comprehensive approach to prevent the development of Metabolic Syndrome. Once diagnosis of Metabolic Syndrome has been made the Alpha Living will help you to abate it.
